The city of Melbourne, FL is located in southern Brevard county on what is commonly referred to as Florida's Space Coast, about 60 miles south of the Kennedy Space Center, about 80 miles east of Orlando and almost exactly mid-way between Jacksonville and Miami. What is now modern-day Melbourne is actually two cities in one, after the merger of the city of Eau Gallie with Melbourne in 1969. In 1888, the then small village was named Crane Creek and an Englishman that had lived in Melbourne, Australia most of his life came there, opened a store and became the local postmaster. When it came time for a new name, someone entered the name of his home city and straws were drawn. The name Melbourne became the new name of the thriving little settlement and would stay as such.
